City invites residents and businesses to try out our Waste Recyclers’ Map

02 November 2023

The City of Cape Town has developed a portal where users can search for private recycling service providers in their area.

One of the key aims of the National Waste Management Strategy is the growth of a Circular Economy in South Africa.

Creating a circular economy requires us to go beyond simply reducing the negative environmental impacts of 'business as usual', also known as the linear economy. A whole new way of doing business needs to be enabled that closes the loop between resource extraction and disposal through waste avoidance, as well as reuse, repair/refurbishment and recycling.

One of the ways the City is facilitating the circular economy is through operation of the City's Waste Recyclers' Map.

This application allows residents or businesses to search for accredited private recycling service providers operating in their area who dispose of or accept recyclable materials such as:

  • Electronic waste
  • Textiles
  • Batteries
  • Plastic/glass/paper
  • Builders rubble
  • Wood/timber
  • Tyres/rubber
  • Metals
  • Oil
  • Paper-based cartons
  • Organic waste

Residents can also consult the map to check if they live in an area that benefits from the City's Think Twice service.

'There is a thriving private waste management and beneficiation sector in Cape Town, and with so much that still goes to waste in our city, there is amazing potential for this sector to continue growing and creating sorely-needed jobs.

'The Waste Recyclers' Map is a great way for the City to support the growth of this economy by linking waste generators with those who can extract value from that waste. I encourage all residents in areas that do not currently benefit from the municipal recycling programme (Think Twice), or those for whom drop-offs are not convenient, to use the Waste Recyclers' Map to explore alternative environmentally-friendly options for their waste,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management, Alderman Grant Twigg.

Residents can access the Waste Recyclers' Map at the following link and save it as a favourite in your internet browser.
